Many of us know and love the song Heart of Worship but how many really know what it is saying. How many of us have stopped to just listen to what is being sung. I personally for the longest time never really considered what it said, but it took me having to go through a hard time in order to be able to just take time and listen and to realize how powerful the lyrics of the song actually are. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPC22XHc8tQ&feature=related
When the music fades
And all is stripped away
And I simply come
Longing just to bring
Something that’s of worth
That will bless your heart
I’ll bring You more than a song
For a song in itself
Is not what You have required
You search much deeper within
Through the ways things appear
You’re looking into my heart
I’m coming back to the heart of worship
And it’s all about You
All about You, Jesus
I’m sorry Lord for the thing I’ve made it
When it’s all about You
It’s all about You Jesus
King of endless worth
No one could express
How much You deserve
Though I’m weak and poor
All I have is Yours
Every single breath
I’ll bring You more than just a song
For a song in itself
Is not what You have required
You search much deeper within
Through the way things appear
You’re looking into my heart
I’m coming back to the heart of worship
And it’s all about You
All about You, Jesus
I’m sorry Lord for the thing I’ve made it
When it’s all about You
It’s all about You Jesus
It’s all about you
Jesus
What do you see when you look at these lyrics? Does anything in them stand out to you? For me there is a lot that stands out. I see a song that should speak to us and show us that worship isn’t about us. That it is all about Christ. All too often we approach worship as what we can get out of it, or when we are just singing the words and not letting them truly impact us and change the way that we act and think. In my own experience I have found that usually when I worshipped I was doing it to what can be referred to as an empty room, sure there were lots of people around me singing too but I wasn’t singing to God. I was just singing because that’s what we were supposed to do. But this isn’t how we are supposed to worship, in our worship we are supposed to be singing to God and communicating with him. That’s what this song is all about. Look at the first verse it talks all about stripping away the music and all of the distractions and just coming to talk to God. It talks about how when we come to worship God we are supposed to long to please him, that worship isn`t about pleasing ourselves or about showing off to others but that when it really comes down to it, it is all about God.
The chorus of the song is what really speaks to me though. This section clearly shows us that God requires more than just our empty singing. He wants us to come to him with an open heart, a heart that longs for him. God wants us to come to come to worship ready to praise him and to want to get to know him better. It shows us that God searches our hearts and knows what our motivations are when we come to worship him. It talks about how the heart of worship is Christ, not us, not what others think of us, but all about Christ and talking to him.
We can see in the next section that our worship will never be enough to repay the debt Christ paid when he died for us. It shows us that he deserves so much more than we could ever give but that we should give everything that we have and are to him. It tells us that every breath we breathe should be to glorify him.
This song really does tell us a lot, but the real question is whether or not we will let it have an impact on us and change the way that we approach worship.
